La Garrotxa has had a tourism strategy since 2001 thanks to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism's (ECST) accreditation of the Volcanic Region of La Garrotxa Natural Park. Over the last 20 years, and with this accreditation as its working model, the community's stakeholders, both public and private, have worked tirelessly together to develop this strategy across the area. The packages tours proposals for tourist that are more respectful with our natural environment have always been a challenge in La Garrotxa. Proof of this has been the accreditation of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, the 1st in Spain. But this commitment has not only been made effective by public institutions. It is important to highlight the commitment of the private sector to the development of tourism in a sustainable way. Thus, from the companies of activities, such as restaurants and accommodation, have also been committed over the years to the ECST, that’s the reason why the first two travel agencies accredited in Spain are in the Garrotxa region. Throughout the years, the Mediterranean diet has proven to be one of the healthiest in the world. It is considered one of the most nutritionally balanced, enriched and one that offers the pleasure of enjoying tasty dishes. Olive oil, legumes, fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, among other high quality and fresh products, are all part of the Mediterranean diet which is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Although it might seem counterintuitive that a library, which is a building in which books are kept, should go outside its walls, for decades now public, university and specialist libraries, etc. have gradually been changing roles. Against this background of constant change, these true chameleons are able to survive because of their ability both to adapt to their surroundings and to meet the needs of any situation: either by offering traditional loan and document consultation services, or also, and increasingly, through involvement in projects associated with access to digital collections, virtuality and social networks, and to experimental projects such as bibliolabs and through collaboration with citizens’ science networks, etc. Read more

At the beginning of 2019 Som Mobilitat and the associations: Turisme Garrotxa and Turisme Rural de la Garrotxa reached an agreement which aimed to enhance collaboration by providing people with shared electric mobility when staying at the associated tourist lodging. The agreement meant that both organizations were able to progress with the same objective: that of providing all those arriving by public transport with a need to rent a car while staying in the area of La Garrotxa with sustainable mobility of some kind. Itinerànnia is a network of 2,500 km paths between the regions of El Ripollès, La Garrotxa and l’Alt Empordà. La Garrotxa is an upland region with a great diversity of habitats. Although its climate is essentially Mediterranean, the proximity of the sea to the east and the Pyrenees to the north ensures that much of the region has a unique microclimate with central European or Atlantic tendencies.
