Walking on the landscapes

At La Garrotxa, in Catalonia, we can enjoy different natural landscapes everyday: from Mediterranean to Pyrenees, from the rich fields to volcanoes. All these in a protected area with several inhabitants: charming medieval villages and ancient trails will be our human landscape. A mosaic landscape, preserved by the locals, now under the protection of a Natural Park. Walking with us these days, we’ll discover la Garrotxa way of living: worked by the landscapes.

DAY 1.
Arrival to La Garrotxa and get to the accommodation in a family run rural house surrounded by fields: this will be our home for the first three nights. Before dinner, we’ll have a welcome meeting with all members of the group: a short presentation of the daily planning and tour leader, and the highlights of every day’s program, as well as an introduction of the area. This will be home’s landscape for us these days. We’ll share a good time meeting the other components of the group with a local cocktail before dinner at accommodation with local products and cuisine.

DAY 2.
Today we’ll follow the best well preserved roman road of the area. The amazing Via Annia roman road links the Pyrenees mountains with the Mediterranean Sea. We’ll enjoy our ecological packed lunch at one of the ancient villages, on the same roman road. Today we will walk through the historic landscape. After the walk, a manager from Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park we’ll welcome us to the Park: brief presentation of the NP and the Conservation projects. Today’s dinner will be in a local restaurant: let’s discover the volcanic cuisine
association.

DAY 3.
Olot is the county town of La Garrotxa. Our first discovery of the volcanic land: we’ll walk on the four volcanoes of the town. The amazing views from the top of the craters will easily make you understand why this region is known as “Catalonia little Switzerland”. We’ll enjoy our ecological packed lunch at a relaxing area near the Fluvia river. A relaxing area with architectural and design surprise. After lunch, relax at the centre of Olot or let yourself go through the ancient streets with the audio guide visit and taste the best local products of the area. Centennial shops, tradition and good local service await you Today we will walk through the gastronomy
landscape. Dinner at accommodation with local products and cuisine.

DAY 4.
La Garrotxa is the best example of a volcanic landscape on the Iberian Peninsula, with 40 volcanoes and more than 20 basalt lava flows. The best hiking itinerary: trails that get inside volcanoes and walking on lava flows. Today we will walk through the volcanic landscape. At the NP house, we’ll take part in the Cultivation Plant Conservation Centre; maybe we can taste an apple variety you ate when you were a child and haven’t seen any more in markets. We’ll enjoy our ecological packed lunch with wonderfuls views over the small lakes natural reservation. We’ll continue our walk to Santa Pau, a charming medieval village surrounded by volcanoes. Once in Santa Pau, relax in a terrace bar in the middle of the old square or let’s discover the history with an audio guide visit. Dinner at accommodation. A wonderful couple runs this charming house.

DAY 5.
The ancient trails are waiting for us today. A small village in Bas valley, with nice balconies with flowers will be our starting point. We’ll go back in time: old trails from medieval times. The rocky pavement of the trail helps to walk up the mountain, where we’ll have the best view over the area. Today we will walk through the viewpoint landscape. We’ll enjoy our ecological packed lunch at the best view point. Today’s afternoon: relax at accommodation or let’s cycle the greenway at your own rhythm with the audio guide. Today’s dinner will be in a local restaurant: let’s discover the volcanic cuisine association.

DAY 6.
Churches, castles and fields: the human landscape in the countryside. We’ll walk to a privileged view point over the volcanic area, to understand the relation between humans and use of the land in the area since the medieval times. Today we will walk through the humanised landscape. We’ll enjoy our ecological packed lunch in a surprising natural spring. Today’s dinner, time for sharing our emotions these days: a gala dinner at accommodation with local gastronomy specialities of the rural house.

DAY 7.
Departure from Garrotxa. You can’t leave the Garrotxa with our authentic taste! Before departing the airport, a good stop at the local products cooperative: your tasty “souvenir” not made in China! Let’s take a piece of the Garrotxa landscape with you!
